Why was Chad's season6 epi so poorly received?...
« on: August 25, 2009, 07:03:24 AM »
Season 6 was going steady with the ratings, averaging 3-3.6 million viewers per epi, however when Chads episode aired it went down to 2.7 million viewers the lowest at that point and after that it was only able to break the 3 mill mark again with one more epi, the rest of the season was in the 2 mill viewers. What was it about Chad's episode that made the ratings go down? was it the Brucas supporters not watching anymore? I mean I thought this episode will be the highest all season as people would be excited to see what Chad comes up with. Any thoughts, guys?

N.B this isnt a hate thread LOL, I looooooooove Chad and actually liked the episode =D

It's not completely true. Ratins stared to slowly decrease before Chad's episode, from episode 6x09 I believe, take a look (the bolded part is Chad's episode 6x11):

I think the reason for it was that the quality of the show went drastically downhill after first few episodes. I hardly remember episodes from 9 to 16, because thehy were so boring :)

But I guess Chad's episode didn't help either since so many people didn't like it.

They're different to the ratings I have:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Tree_Hill_%28Season_6%29

According to here Chads epi was the first all season to get below 3 mill. I know I shouldn't really trust Wiki but they do have sources.

This thread at treehillforums has the same ratings @ wiki:

I wouldn't believe Wikipedia. The site I got the ratings from (Marc Berman's site) is very reliable, it always has full and correct ratings.

True, I guess ratings were slowly going down week by week.

But I do remember a lot of fans here hating the episode, why is that? lol.

Well, I don't want to make it seem like a bash Chad, because I really admire him for taking such risk and I'm sure he put a lot of afford in this episode but I think the writing, especially the dialogues were just weak. I mean a literally cringed during the LP scene on the bridge when Peyton starts to dance and says something like "I need freedom, I need love", it was so cheesy. I mean just look at it:

LP on the bridge

I aslo think the acting wasn't very good, I felt like the most of the actors didn't feel comfortable playing those scenes. I only liked Joy and Paul.

I do agree that scene was absolutely so cheesy....maybe I was just obsessed with Chads hottness in that suit to notice LOL but the writing was pretty...meh.

The ratings where down before Chads episode aired.

IMO the problem (well not really a problem) with the episode was Chad made it like it was from the '40s, not like it was from '09 about the '40s. You see what I mean?

it was pretty cheasy but he said so himself in an interview, the movies back then were cheasy so it just made sense to make it like that...
i am not a fan of old movies myself but i think he did an awesome job with his episode and i was on set while they were shooting most of it and he was soooo happy and passionate about it that i end up being biased while watching it...
and jep the rating were going down before chads episode, they were against dancing with the stars if i remember correctly and that about killed them:)

I'm sorry, but I disagree. I suggest you to watch the movie 'Casablanca' which was Chad's inspiration for his OTH epsidoe and you'll see a huge difference between quality of dialogues. Yes, they may seem a little pompous or cheesy sometimes but they're still great, while dialouges in 6x11 made me feel really embarrassed when I was watching it.

And I know that Chad tried really hard with this episode and I admire him for this but I think that maybe he should've chosen something less difficult as his first writing attempt. Casablanca is a one of the best movies of all times for a reason, it's really hard to compete with it.

well you are probably right, i have never seen casablanca so i really cant tell but almost all the old movies that i have seen are kind of cheasy and stuff:) either way i really dont think that the rating went down because of his episode, the show just went downhill after the second half of the season in my opinion and as i said the ratings were going down even before chads episode..

^I really recommend you to see it, it's really amazing, one of the best movies ever in my opinion and there were few references to it in Chad's episode :)

And I agree with you, I don't think ratings went downhill just because of Chad's episode. The whole show went downhill in second half of the season and the ratings were just representation of it.

Ok, I haven't been following the ratings but WHAT, we were under a million for quite a few eps?! Thats just....wow. Honestly, I think the show has begun to feel 'tired', recycled storylines, new characters taking up too much screentime etc.
